The voice startled her. She opened her eyes and saw a boy who looked around her age. His floppy brown hair fell about his green eyes as he leaned over the wall to look at her. Emma pulled herself together.
Hello, said he, I presume youre the new girl from next-door? He gestured towards Emmas house, My father said a family was going to live there. Im Jonas. He held out his hand.
Hello Jonas, Emma took his hand and with a firm shake she said, Im Emma, youre right, thats my house.
He smiled at her, she felt welcomed.

It was Sunday. Shed shifted in the night, and now lay, fully clothed, on top of her sheets, arms and legs wrapped around one of her pillows. The sun shone over her face, disturbing her slumber, and with a yawn, she woke. She rubbed her eyes, ruffled her hair, then sat up and yawned again.
Still in yesterdays dress, she shuffled downstairs.
Her mother and father were already up. Her father crunched cereal whilst her mother gazed out of the window, sipping fruit tea. Fruit juice was set out on the table, Emma poured herself a glass and sat admiring the kitchen. What was a dank, dark room had now turned into a bright open space. Everything shone a clean glow, the white net curtains let in a great deal of light, and it looked more like a place Emma could call home. She was happy to realise the rain had stopped.
